A molecular mechanism that occurs within our bodies and in the environment around us is called oxidation-reduction reactions--also known as redox reactions. All molecules, whether they are part of a liquid, gas or solid, possess a number of pairs of negatively charged electrons. As the molecules of different elements interact with oxygen molecules, these electrons are passed around. These interactions are called redox reactions and there are two possible outcomes to the process. When a normal or "active" oxygen molecule gives up electrons to another element, leaving behind one or more unpaired electrons, it becomes "reactive" or what is sometimes called a free radical. On the other hand, if a free radical scavenges electrons (restoring its electron pairs) from another element, the oxygen molecule again becomes "active" and the element giving up electrons is said to be oxidized. Within the framework of the human body, free radicals are a necessary by-product of energy conversion in the metabolism. Their function here is to scavenge metabolic waste products, neutralizing their toxic and pathogenic effects until they can be eliminated. Free radicals are also produced by neutrophils, a type of white corpuscle produced by the body's defense mechanism. These free radicals function as part of your body's immune response. Their scavenging activity neutralizes the molecules of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Because they are not selective, the good that free radicals do is made possible by their proximity to the “bad guys” they neutralize. If the body produces too many free radicals or acquires too many from the environment, the extra free radicals end up scavenging and damaging healthy tissue and friendly bacteria. This results in impairment of the metabolism and cellular reproduction in every part of the body, leading to increased vulnerability to disease and an acceleration of the aging process. A number of factors contribute to unhealthy numbers of free radicals, including poor diet and health habits, chronic illness, excessive stress (physical and mental), lack of rest and exposure to environmental sources of free radicals--pollution, harmful chemicals, second-hand smoke, radiation, airborne pathogens, etc. The study of oxidation-reduction, free radicals and antioxidants is made difficult by the lightning fast, fleeting nature of the reactions--they are extremely difficult to isolate and observe.
